GHOST TOWN (2008) 74/100

Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) doesn’t just dislike people – he’s also seeing ghosts, who bother him even more. And since Bertram was revived after momentarily dying, he now finds he’s in both worlds and is pestered constantly by ghosts wanting him to do things for him in the world of the living. Tea Leoni and Greg Kinnear also star.

THE DUCHESS 75/100

The 18th century’s Duchess of Devonshire had something of a reputation – for strong views and a lifestyle of excess. Keira Knightly plays her here, opposite Ralph Fiennes and directed by Saul Dibb. Charlotte Rampling heads the supporting cast.

GHOST 76/100

Brian Webster's take:
"You’d need to be cold as ice for this tragic romance to fail to sweep you away."

THE DUCHESS 75/100

Brian Webster's take:
"Deserves credit for playing things straight – complete with its moral quagmire and inherent sadness. The performances of Knightley, Fiennes and Atwell really make it work."

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE 70/100

James Bond (Sean Connery) and his latest female co-worker are used as pawns by the evil Blofeld of SPECTRE in an attempt to secure a Russian decoding device. A convoluted but streamlined plot is sprinkled with great action sequences but the kitsch factor is still in full effect.

DAYS OF THUNDER 57/100

Brian Webster's take:
"The story is predictably pedestrian, the conflict laughable and the dialogue too lifeless to be laughable, but closer to that than convincing or compelling."

SOUTHLAND TALES 71/100

Brian Webster's take:
"This is not just another hodgepodge of a movie that’s all noise and excess; writer/ director Richard Kelly has a point here; he has plenty to say."
